Title: “Conservative Esthetic Dentistry: An Update for the Orthodontist”

Course Description: Ever wonder how best to coordinate treatment planning with your restorative dentists to attain optimal esthetic results? What esthetic principles are fundamental to generating consistently esthetic results? How do you best select bonding systems and materials for optimal bracket retention? What about new approaches to caries risk assessment, biofilm treatments, probiotics and the prevention and treatment of white spots?This presentation will address these and many more contemporary topics in the realm of conservative esthetic dentistry. Coordinated approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of interarch tooth size discrepancies as well as appropriate space distribution for cases involving undersized teeth will be discussed with special emphasis on the ortho/restorative interactions that are needed to optimize results. Both the use of directly bonded restorations for tooth shape alteration as well as insights into successful porcelain veneers will be chronicled.Detailed treatment planning considerations will be elucidated with regards to the management and treatment of missing anterior teeth, including various approaches to providing long-term esthetic provisional restorations. Vital tooth bleaching options both intra and post-treatment will be addressed in light of the latest clinical research. These and many other salient topics will be presented in a manner that highlights the restorative/orthodontic interactions required to optimize clinical success across a broad spectrum of treatment options.
Biographies: Harald O. Heymann, D.D.S., M.Ed.
Dr. Heymann is Professor in Operative Dentistry at the UNC School of Dentistry. He is a Fellow in the ICD, ACD, Academy of Dental Materials, and is a Fellow and Past-President of the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry. He is the author of over 185 scientific publications, has given over 1,200 lectures worldwide, is Editor-in-chief of the Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry, and has received the Gordon J. Christensen Award for excellence as a CE speaker. 

 

Gavin C. Heymann, DDS, MS
Dr. Heymann earned his DDS and MS in Orthodontics at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry. He received the Kramer Award of excellence and was elected as an alumni member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon. He was the recipient of the American College of Dentists Leadership Award, and was a Thomas P. Hinman scholar. His research interests are in the areas of temporary anchorage devices in orthodontics, novel treatment techniques for management of pre-adolescent Class III patients, applications of 3D imaging, and interdisciplinary treatment. Dr. Heymann has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications, serves as a guest reviewer for both orthodontic and dental journals, and has lectured to orthodontic and dental audiences alike. He maintains a private orthodontic practice in Chapel Hill and Durham, NC.
