Speaker Dr. David C. Hatcher
Presentation Title 3D Surface and Volumetric Imaging: Emerging Orthodontic Tools
Brief Abstract Cone Beam CT (volumetric scans) and surface scanners have been recently introduced into dentistry. The surface images and sub-surface volumetric scans can be combined into a 3D matrix to create an anatomically accurate re-construction of the orthodontic patient. The anatomic constructs called models, are comprised of individual objects including whole teeth, bones, joints, skin and muscles. This presentation will introduce how the models can be used for biometric analyses, growth simulations, treatment simulations and therapy guidance. The 3D models can be extended into the 4th and 5th dimensions where motion and function can be simulated and analyzed. The daily orthodontic practice encounters many diagnostic dilemmas that can benefit from appropriate imaging. This lecture will propose imaging strategies employing 3D imaging modalities to reveal the hidden anatomy of common conditions in a way that aids the clinician with diagnosis, treatment planning and treatment. The ranges of conditions that will be covered include: growth disturbances, jaw asymmetries, acquired changes in occlusion, impacted teeth, incidental findings and pathologies involving the TMJ, airway and sinuses.Imaging and clinical goals, risks and benefits will be discussed during this presentation.
Biography Dr. David C. HatcherDavid C. Hatcher, D.D.S., M.Sc., M.R.C.D.(c) received his D.D.S. degree from the University of Washington in 1973. Subsequently he completed two years active duty in the U.S. Public Health Service and a one year general practice residency program at the University of Vermont Medical Center. Following three years as an instructor and one year as acting director of the general practice residency and the hospital dental clinical at the University of Washington, Dr. Hatcher entered the graduate program in radiology at the University of Toronto and was granted a specialty degree in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology in 1982 and an M.Sc. in 1983. His thesis topic dealt with radiology of TMD. Dr. Hatcher was an Associate Professor and Chairman of the Division of Radiology for five years at the University of Alberta, Canada. He was also Director of the Temporomandibular Joint Investigation Unit and Clinic while at the University of Alberta. Presently Dr. Hatcher is in private practice in Sacramento, California and has faculty appointments at the University of Southern Nevada, University of California San Francisco and the University of Pacific Dental Schools. He has published many articles and lectured extensively to medical and dental organizations in the United States and Canada.
